“Rare-earth nitrides; Outrageous magnetism, heavy fermion transport“

Abstract:
In 2006 we shifted from growing GaN films to try the lanthanide nitrides, LnN, Ln the 15 chemical species from La to Lu. We used a technological excuse, though in reality it was the outrageous, free-ranging magnetism that interested us. Now, 18 years later, there is a very serious potential technological application for the outrage integrated with superconductors to support advanced computing. And there have been serendipitous surprises: (i) chemistry to compete with Haber-Bosch and (ii) heavy-fermion transport/superconductivity in a 4f band. My seminar will walk through it all, fundamentals, technology and surprises.
